SIGHTS OF COTTBUS

Old market place with pharmaceutical
museum
At the southern edge of the old market with his baroque bourgeois houses the pharmaceutical museum (Apothekenmuseum) is located. In 1573 the lion pharmacy was opened here, nowadays the museum contains original equipment and instruments from Lusatian pharmacies.
If you want to have a view over the city, you can climb the steeple of the "Oberkirche". This Gothic church was built in the 15th century, the baroque altar dated from 1661 was created by Andreas Schulze.
The monastic church, also called Wendish church, the rests of the old city-wall, the Spremberger tower, and the Puschkinpromenade are also very interesting visiting points.
The most beautiful art noveau theatre in Europe, opened 1908, demonstrates a perfect synthesis of architecture, arts and crafts, painting and sculpture. More than 10000 visitors annually enjoy seeing musicals, operas, ballets, and dramas or listening to concerts.
In 1846 Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau
built the Branitz parc with pyramids and the castle.
The entrance of the zoological gardens and the parc of the national horticultural show (Bundesgartenschau 1995) is located not far from the Branitz parc.
The contrast between the green nature and the surface
mining all around in the region presents an impressive view.
Cottbus offers also many leisure-time activities: rowing in the Spreewald
or making other sports in one of the gymnasiums, swimming stadions or athletic
grounds.
For only watching sports you can visit for example a meeting of the Olympic
cycling training camp.
