The Technical University of Cottbus exists since 1991. It is still being built-up. Nowadays there are 3000 students participating in ten different courses of studies (civil engineering, architecture, economics, environmental sciences, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics). The final capacity will be over 6000 students.

A lot of the inhabitans of Cottbus work at the lignite mining or at one of the power stations. In former times of the Geman Democratic Republic Cottbus had been a centre of textile industry.
